Orange-Ginger Glazed Fish with Gewürztraminer - from Julie and Tom
Wednesday 12 May, 2010

Julie and Tom recommend our 2009 Gewürztraminer with this fun and easy fish dish!

Orange-Ginger Glazed Fish
4 pieces halibut steak (or.. Tom suggests tilapia fillets!)
1/3 cup mayonnaise
3 T sweet orange marmalade
1 T grated, peeled fresh ginger
1 t rice vinegar
1/2 t fresh grated fresh orange peel
1/4 t salt
1/8 t coarsely ground black pepper
1/4 cup macadamia nuts, toasted and coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 475. Stir together everything but the nuts, and spoon the mixture over the fish in a shallow glass baking dish. Bake 10-12 minutes until fish is opaque throughout and topping is lightly browned. Sprinkle with Macadamia nuts to serve.

Cold snap decimates potential 2010 Colorado grape crop
Monday 14 December, 2009

Very cold temperatures from December 8/9 through 10/11 (2009) have caused significant bud damage on cold-tender grape varieties in various locations throughout Western Colorado (and possibly along the Front Range). Data from the CAVE vineyard weather station network show temperatures dropped to about -4 F in the area to the East of Palisade and on the eastern edge of East Orchard Mesa; about -10 to -13 F along G Rd west of Palisade and on Orchard Mesa; -18 F in the Redlands; and below -20 F west of Mesa Mall towards Fruita.

We have been sampling and testing the budwood from the vines in our vineyard and it is showing extreme damage. We expect that we will need to retrain almost all of our vineyards and there will be no crop on most varieties. Only Riesling at one of our locations appears to have survived largely unscathed. Chardonnay, showing 50% bud damage at this point, may also have some crop if the trunks survived.

Whitewater Hill harvests 115 tons of grapes in 2008
Wednesday 29 October, 2008

Whitewater Hill Vineyards harvested a record 115 tons of grapes from 36 acres in 2008, finishing on October 22, picking late harvest Chardonnay destined for Zero Below. A few tons of grapes (Riesling and Merlot) are still hanging for ice wine and port production.

Harvest began late this year with almost nothing picked before the Colorado Mountain Winefest on September 20. Almost continuous sunny hot weather followed, ripening the grapes quickly. A record early hard frost hit Grand Junction and most vineyards on October 13. Fortunately, all varieties had fully ripened by then and all had been harvested except for Riesling and the late harvest Chardonnay.

Harvesting At Whitewater Hill

We sell most of our grapes and found we were unable to sell all of our Chardonnay and Merlot grapes this year due to lack of in state demand. These grapes have been processed at our facility and we are now offering bulk wine sales of Chardonnay and Merlot to licensed wineries.

Note: Of the 50 states, Colorado ranks 21st in wine production (2006, WineAmerica), producing 3000 times less gallons of wine than the leading state of California. Planting a couple of acres of wine grapes in Colorado can easily result in a statewide wine grape glut.
