The Climate

As wine growers, we are intensely interested in the environment in which the grapevines grow. The quality of the grape and as a result, the wine, can be directly and indirectly affected by the climate.

Perhaps the most important climatic variable is temperature. Summer is important for the growing of the vine and the fruit, but winter may even be more important in our location because of the possible damage to vines by cold injury events.

Therefore we have a wide assortment of temperature monitoring apparatus, two of which are shown in the table below.

Click on the following link, Whitewater Hill Climatology, for more information on this fascinating subject.

Vineyard temperature logger located at Kay Vineyard.

Weather station located at 31 road in North Merlot block.

The Blocks

Each vineyard site is further divided into blocks, which are contiguous sections of identical variety and age. For example, at the 32 Road Vineyard, there are 5 blocks, corresponding to each of the 3 varieties planted in 2000 and one variety, Syrah, that was planted in 2000 and extended in 2003.

If you follow this link, The Block Data, you can learn more about the characteristics of each block.

The Varieties

The Varieties that we grow are:
Cabernet Franc
Cabernet Sauvignon
Chardonnay
Gewurztraminer
Merlot
Riesling
Syrah/Shiraz
Viognier
Muscat Blanc.

The Harvest

When do we harvest our grapes?

Well, it depends. We diligently monitor pH, sugar and acidity as well as the taste of the grapes. We distribute this information during the harvest season to the wineries that purchase our grapes and schedule harvest based on their wishes. If you follow this link, The Harvest Data you can find out when the grapes were harvested each year and the pH, sugar and acidity for each picking.
